Passenger Injured in Tractor-Trailer Underride Collision

A passenger was injured in an underride collision with a tractor-trailer in Gloucester Township on Saturday. According to the Gloucester Township Police, the sedan driver failed to yield to the tractor-trailer as it attempted a lefthand turn near the intersection of Sicklerville Road and Garwood Road. In the process of illegally passing the truck, the driver struck the trailer, becoming wedged underneath near the rear axles.

Both the driver and passenger were able to free themselves from the vehicle. The passenger sustained a broken arm and several lacerations, officials said. The drivers did not sustain injuries.

The collisions caused the trailer’s refrigeration system fuel tank to leak diesel fuel. Several fire crews responded to stabilize and remove the vehicle from under the trailer and stop the leak.

Underride crashes are one of the deadliest accidents and occur when a smaller vehicle collides with a tractor-trailer and slides underneath it. Injuries are often catastrophic or fatal. These accidents are particularly dangerous because the smaller vehicle is easily crushed by the trailer and typically experiences fatal roof shearing.
