Four New Jersey men in a Mazda fell over the edge of northbound Interstate 95 in Port Richmond on Friday. According to witnesses, the driver was racing a Dodge Challenger before losing control, striking a barrier, and crashing over the edge of the road.
Two unrestrained backseat passengers and a puppy were ejected from the vehicle and killed. The driver and front passenger were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.
In densely populated urban areas like Philadelphia, the consequences of reckless driving behaviors, such as speeding and racing, are severe. Philadelphia has the highest number of traffic-related deaths in the state, an alarmingly high per-capita rate more than twice that of New York City.
Speeding is a leading factor in fatal crashes. At higher speeds, the force of a collision increases exponentially and significantly increases the risk of severe injuries and fatalities. In Pennsylvania, nearly one-third of all fatal crashes involve speeding, and the risk is even greater when combined with aggressive driving or street racing.
